Community bids farewell to four victims of Embuzini shooting in Orlando West

The Embuzini shooting claimed four innocent lives on 11 May 2026, the broken-hearted community of Orlando West came together on Sunday to honour those lives in a deeply moving memorial service that was as much a cry for justice as it was a farewell.

Four people were ruthlessly gunned down in what is believed to have been a robbery attack at the Embuzini informal settlement. The victims were killed in cold blood — their lives cut short in an act of senseless violence that left families, neighbours, and friends utterly devastated.

The news spread fast through the streets of Orlando West, plunging the entire community of Embuzini into a state of shock and profound grief. For six days, the community mourned quietly — until Sunday came, and Embuzini found its voice.

On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the community hall at Embuzini informal settlement was filled to capacity as residents of Orlando West came out in large numbers to pay their respects at a memorial service for the four victims. The atmosphere inside the hall was heavy with emotion — tears flowed freely as family members, neighbours and close friends of the deceased stood to speak about the people they had lost. Some recalled the laughter, the kindness and the dreams of those taken too soon. Others could barely find the words.

Because the victims came from different parts of the country and some are from Lesotho, the burials will take place on different dates and in different locations — making Sunday’s memorial the one moment where everyone who loved them could grieve together, in one place, as one community.

Ward 39 Councillor Lefa Molise, who organised the memorial service together with other community leaders, addressed the gathering with a message that balanced grief with resolve. He paid tribute to the victims and their families before turning to the community with a firm and unwavering message.

“What happened here in Embuzini on Monday was not just a crime against four individuals — it was a crime against our entire community. We refuse to be defined by this tragedy. We will mourn, we will heal, and we will rise. To the families of the victims, Ward 39 stands with you. You are not alone. And to those who did this — the law will find you. We call on every resident of Embuzini and Orlando West to work with the police, to speak out, and to help us ensure that this kind of senseless violence never happens here again.”

“We have gathered here today not in defeat, but in solidarity. The lives that were lost in Embuzini mattered. They were sons, daughters, parents and friends. As leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure that the communities we serve are safe — and as communities, it is your power to demand that safety. Let us not allow fear to silence us. Let us honour the memory of these four souls by standing together, by protecting each other.”

— King Mbembe of Mpumalanga

As the memorial service drew to a close, the message from the community of Embuzini was clear and powerful — they will grieve, but they will not be silenced, and they will not be defeated.
