On 10 April 2026, I was on the ground at the Women’s Hostel in Orlando West, where Ward Councillor Lefa Molise took centre stage in addressing one of the community’s longest-standing challenges. The Monthly Progress Report and Oversight meeting was not just another routine engagement — it was a turning point.
For over a decade, residents have lived with a failing sewer system, but this time, there was a strong sense that real leadership had stepped in. Councillor Molise stood before the community with confidence, setting the tone for accountability and action.

Joined by MMC for Human Settlements Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso and officials from Joburg Water, Councillor Molise led the engagement, ensuring that residents’ voices were heard while also driving solutions. The focus was clear: fixing the sewer system and addressing ongoing water loss in the area.
During the engagement, MMC Mabaso further reassured residents that the matter is receiving serious attention at the highest level, committing that he will return to the site alongside City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Morero at the end of May to follow up on the progress of the development.

Speaking directly to residents, Councillor Molise did not shy away from the reality of the situation but offered strong reassurance. “We understand the frustration and the long years our residents have endured. I want to assure the community that this matter is receiving urgent attention, and we are working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the sewer system is fully repaired and functioning properly,” he said.

“This is not just about infrastructure — it’s about restoring dignity to our people.” His words were met with renewed hope from residents who have been waiting far too long for change.
As I left the site, one thing was clear — this was more than just a progress report; it was a statement of intent. With Councillor Lefa Molise at the forefront, supported by MMC Mabaso and with a follow-up visit expected from the Mayor, there is growing confidence that this long-standing issue will finally be resolved.
The goal remains simple but critical: a fully functional sewer system, reduced water loss, and restored dignity for the people of Orlando West.
