City of Johannesburg empowers local traders through Spaza Shop summit in Meadowlands

Today, I attended a highly impactful Spaza Shop and Informal Traders Summit hosted by the City of Johannesburg at Bapeli Hall in Meadowlands. The event, which forms part of a broader summit and expo programme, was hosted locally in Ward 41 under the leadership of Councillor Lunga Xuma.

From the moment proceedings began, it was clear that this workshop was designed to bring real value to local traders — equipping them with knowledge, compliance requirements, and access to opportunities that can strengthen their businesses.

The summit was organised following ongoing engagements within the community, where it became evident that many informal traders needed guidance on city by-laws and compliance. Representatives from various departments engaged directly with attendees, outlining how traders can operate legally while also accessing financial support and continuous educational programmes offered by government.

Councillor Xuma played a key role in ensuring that this initiative reached the people on the ground, reinforcing the importance of empowering local businesses as drivers of economic growth in the township.

In an interview, Councillor Xuma emphasised the broader vision behind the initiative. “The aim is to empower our local businesses — to make sure they understand the by-laws, access available opportunities, and grow into sustainable enterprises that can uplift the community,” he said. His leadership was evident throughout the session, as he encouraged traders to take compliance seriously while also embracing the support systems being introduced to them.

A key highlight of the workshop was a presentation by Emergency Medical Services Area Inspector Jennifer Radzilani, who focused on fire safety compliance in spaza shops.

“Every spaza shop must have a 4.5kg fire extinguisher that is serviced annually, and clear signage must always be visible to direct people to exits during emergencies,” she explained. She also reminded attendees of the golden rule in case of fire: “Stop, drop, and roll, and move in an orderly manner towards the exit.”

As the workshop concluded, it was clear that this initiative is not only educating traders but also building a safer, more compliant, and economically empowered Meadowlands.
