Cable stealing is becoming a huge problem in our community.
On the 17th December, residents in Orlando ( Berries Section) and some parts of Diepkloof found themselves in the dark after it was discovered that their electric cables were stolen.
Members of the community conducted an investigation and discovered that the cable thieves are living among them in the community.
On Sunday the 19th December, residents of Orlando Beries Section discovered stolen electric cables at the scrapyard situated at the informal settlements situated at the outline street near Miami Ground in the Berries area.
Community members were angry and went on a rampage, they demolished and burnt several shacks believed to belong to the cable thieves. Community members are calling for the informal settlements to be removed. The police were called into the scene and calm was restored.
Several people who live in the settlement found themselves homeless and had to seek refugee elsewhere because their shacks were demolished. Most of the them complain that they had nothing to do with cable theft.
Electricity has since been restored in the area.
