Maponya Mall steps in to support Welizibuko learners with school shoes

Learners at Welizibuko Primary School received a meaningful boost to their school experience following a shoe donation initiative by Maponya Mall, which took place on 12 February 2026.

The initiative forms part of the mall’s ongoing commitment to supporting education and uplifting communities across Soweto.

A total of 28 learners from Welizibuko Primary School benefited directly from the donation, while the broader initiative reached four primary schools, with 104 pairs of school shoes distributed in total.

The selection of beneficiaries was done in partnership with ward councillors and school leadership, ensuring that the support reached learners who are most in need.

Speaking on behalf of Maponya Mall, Sharon Radebe said the initiative was driven by a desire to support learners both practically and emotionally.

“Receiving proper school shoes helps learners feel confident and proud to attend school, allowing them to participate fully without feeling embarrassed about their circumstances. Through this initiative, we want to show learners that their education matters and inspire them to stay in school and work toward their future goals,” she said.

The mall’s commitment to community development extends beyond donations, with programmes such as the Maponya Mall Community Hub offering skills development, free internet access, and educational initiatives including spelling competitions.

Welizibuko Primary School principal expressed heartfelt appreciation, saying, “We would like to sincerely thank Maponya Mall for their generous contribution to our learners. This donation has restored confidence and dignity among our children, and it serves as a reminder that the community cares about their future.”
