The popular club Makubenjalo Pub & Restaurant in Diepkloof, Soweto was officially shut down last week, following a series of non-compliance issues and persistent noise complaints from the community. The closure comes after months of efforts by the residents of Diepkloof Ward 26 to address the disturbance.
The community, led by Ward Councillor Sithembiso Mashinini, had repeatedly engaged with the management of Makubenjalo, pleading for an end to the noise that disrupted their lives, particularly during the night. Despite these efforts, the management remained arrogant and non-cooperative, prompting the community to take further action.

In response to a petition signed by residents of Diepkloof Ward 26, the Gauteng Liquor Board investigated the establishment. The investigation revealed several compliance issues, ultimately leading to the issuance of a closure notice.
The closure of Makubenjalo Pub & Restaurant marks a significant victory for the community of Soweto. Residents have long complained about the inability to sleep due to the noise from the establishment, even on weekdays. The community is now calling for a broader movement to reclaim our neighborhoods and report other establishments that cause disturbances.

Councillor Sithembiso Mashinini issued a statement on the closure, highlighting the importance of adhering to community standards and legal compliance. The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Ward 26 also released a statement praising the successful closure of the pub and restaurant.
“This is a victory for the community of Diepkloof Ward 26,” said one member of the community who spoke to Loxion Express. “We are tired of places that make noise and disrupt our lives. It’s high time we stand up and reclaim our neighborhoods.”
A video (see below) accompanying this report shows police confiscating alcohol from Makubenjalo, underscoring the enforcement action taken against the non-compliant establishment.
The community of Soweto is hopeful that this closure will serve as a precedent for addressing similar issues in other areas, ensuring a peaceful and respectful environment for all residents.
